“Programming takes on a professional context here”

As a computer science student at the University of Rostock, I first came into contact with RST at the IT Career Night. What began as a casual chat quickly developed into something more: in the summer of 2024, I completed a 20-week internship at RST and was then able to continue working there straight away as a working student.
My working environment was very diverse right from the start. Apprentices, long-serving staff and newcomers work side by side here. You can quickly find someone to help with any question – which is extremely helpful, especially in the early stages. So, despite the many new experiences, my start at RST was pleasantly straightforward.
Today, I am an integral part of a team developing internal project management software from scratch – from the initial idea to the final application. I gain insights into project planning, coordination and internal project management, and am right at the heart of the interplay between conception, development and technical implementation. Of course, bugs and user feedback are part of the job too – and that’s exactly what makes it exciting.
What do I particularly like about the work? Definitely the real-world product focus. Here, programming takes on a practical context and no longer feels like the ‘coding exercises’ from some seminars. You can immediately see the added value the software brings to the company – and how users interact with it.
Added to this is the constant dialogue within the team and with other colleagues. This ensures continuous development, both professionally and personally. I have the opportunity to take on responsibility and contribute my own ideas within flat hierarchies.
The combination of a pleasant working environment, good support and genuine involvement in projects has made my entry into the industry a really positive experience – first as an intern and now as a working student. And by the way: the flexible working hours fit in perfectly with my studies!
